Panchakarma

  • VAMAN (induced vomiting)

Panchakarma means the five ‘kriyas’, which is to purify and eliminate the impurities from the body. It is one of the types of shodhana / Sharirshuddhi (detoxification process of the body) therapies in ayurveda.

Ayurvedic treatment is based upon various factors causing disease. According to which it is divided mostly into two categories shodhana(a part of treatment used to clean body having large quantum of doshas/toxins) and shamana(part of treatment used to clean body having little quantum). Panchakarma therapy is one of the types of shodhana / Sharirshuddhi (detoxification process of the body) therapies in ayurveda. It includes five types of procedures, vamana, virechana, basti, nasya and raktamokshana, so called panchakarma.

Snehan

Making utilize of ghee or oil internally as well as externally for smoothing and soothing effect to body. It includes Shirodhara, pizzichil, katibasti, janubasti etc. for the process of vaman and virechan Snehan is required.

 

Swedan

It is a pre-procedure for main panchakarma process and done mandatory before. It gives temporary as well as long lasting relief from pain.

Vaman

It is a procedure in which the vitiated doshas are expelled-out forcefully through mouth in the form of vomiting.Vaman process is intended for diseases based on kapha dosha or kaphapitta dosha. The process is generally planned to cover diseases from upper part of the body, like bronchial asthma, recurrent sinusitis etc.

Virechan

It is a purgation procedure in which the vitiated pitta or pittakapha doshas are terrified from the body. The procedure is designed generally in the diseases like piles, skin ailments, semen disorders etc.

Basti

It is the chief procedure done for Vata disorders. It is the process in which medicine in liquid form is administered in intestines via rectal route. It is the only procedure accepted and done easily at any age.

Abhyanga (स्नेहन)

Abhyang – Is a form of Ayurvedic medicine that involves massage of the body with large amounts of warm oil. The oil is often pre-medicated with herbs for specific conditions. Abhyanga can be done as part of the steps of panchakarma therapy, especially in the first stage: Purva Karma (pre-treatment), or as its own therapy. It is often followed by swedan therapy, a warm bath, yoga or laying out in the sun.

Many times abhyang is performed by two or more massage therapists working in sync but it can also be done by an individual. Oils used can vary depending on the season and the individual’s constitution (dosha) but commonly used oils include sesame, coconut, sunflower, mustard and almond.

It is the chief procedure done for Vata disorders. It is a process in which medicine in liquid form is administered in intestines via rectal route. It is the only procedure accepted and done easily at any age. Vata’s predominant site is the colon. Basti, is the most effective treatment of vata disorders, The speciality of this treatment is that it can be administered both in a healthy, as well as unhealthy person. When a healthy person subjects himself to Panchakarma, it has a preventive, restorative and rejuvenative effect on the body.

Nasya – The administration of drugs through the nose is called Nasya. Nasya is particularly useful in urdhvajatrugat disease. It specifically provides strength to the head, nose and neck by improving the functioning of the endocrine glands it works on the whole body . It will prevent premature wrinkling, greying and hair fall.

This treatment aims to provide optimum rejuvenation to eyes. Dough of Urad is put around the eye ball in such a way that a dam like appearance is seen. Then herbal healing ghee is put in this groove to lubricate eye and surrounding areas. This provides improved vision with beautiful eyes and strengthening of eye tissues
